Invitation to the Avon Volunteer Fire Department’s Annual 9/11 Memorial Service

The Avon Volunteer Fire Department invites members of our community to join us for our 24th annual 9/11 Memorial Service as we remember those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

This year marks 25 years since nearly 3,000 lives were lost in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We will gather as a community to remember, reflect and recommit to never forgetting the events of that day and those whose lives were forever changed.

MEMORIAL SERVICE | 8:00 a.m.
The service at AVFD Company 1 will include the National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, and the Firefighter’s Prayer.

Guest speakers John Carmon and Carmine Centrella will offer September 11 reflections drawing from their experiences following the attacks. Carmon helped organize volunteers assisting with recovery efforts in New York and spoke nationally about the wave of loss experienced nationwide. Centrella responded to Ground Zero with members of the UConn Fire Department Technical Rescue Team and participated in rescue and recovery efforts.

The service will also include poetry and musical tributes from retired Avon Police Officer Sue Kassey, the Sweet Adelines, the Avon High School Choral Singers, singer Nathaniel Hintz, saxophonist Mike Thrower, and bagpipers.

We hope you will join us as we remember the lives lost, reflect on the events of September 11, and come together as a community.
